Writing is difficult. Many struggle with concision and disambiguation, the two most important facets of writing. This is an example of the type of editing I specialize in. We’ll take a look at the first 350 words from one of my own published pieces and how I edited it.

Initial Draft
For those of you who read my reviews, I’ve brought up a few times that I don’t play games for story. I’ve made at least mentioning the story of the games an obligatory checkmark for you the readers. I’m fully aware that people do play games for narrative satisfaction, and that’s perfectly fine. But, for the most part, video games just don’t do it for me when it comes to stories.

For those of you who read my reviews, I’ve brought up a few times that I don’t play games for story. I mention the story out of an obligation to inform the readers. I’m aware people do play games for narrative satisfaction, and that’s fine. But, video games don’t do it for me when it comes to stories.
The edited version is well-structured and much more concise. The word count went from 71down to 58 in the edit; that’s 18% less words! The opening of any piece of writing is the most important. This is when you’re selling the audience in what you have to say. Read the two paragraphs out loud and feel the difference when you’re speaking. Additionally, the whole piece was edited down from 1574 words to 1317, a 16% reduction.
